SleepingIt seems like nearly every week there’s a news story touting the importance of sleep, rest and relaxation. It’s critical to rejuvenating the body and mind. We all know that a good night’s sleep is at the forefront of this, yet 35 percent of all Americans are not getting the recommended seven to eight hours of sleep each night.

That’s every one in three adults — are you one of them?

Healthy sleep habits are responsible for allowing your brain and body to recharge so we can perform optimally both cognitively and physically. During sleep, essential parts of the body are repaired and restored so they can be used again in the future in a way that supports our day.

We all want better sleep — here’s how you can do it.

Develop a routine. A sample routine can include a definitive end to electronics, time to read, a relaxing bath, or a brief listen to a podcast. Your routine should only consist of activities that serve to slow you down from the day. An hour prior to bed, try not to do anything that will work you up, such as cleaning your home. Once you have a routine figured out, stick to it!

Try not to drink (too much) water right before bed. This is an important one to include because water has so many positive benefits, yet drinking some before you go to sleep can actually disrupt your sleep cycle. Instead, keep in a hydrated status throughout the day.

Change your sleep position. Remember that your back and neck should be in alignment. That means that, ideally, no propped up pillows or unnecessary twisting of your body.

Lower room temperature. Studies show that we sleep better in lower temperatures. Especially during the hotter months of the year, either sleep with your thermostat set lower or, in an effort to save on electricity, simply invest in a couple of rotating fans for your bedroom. The white noise that these fans provide is a major bonus.

Get adjusted. Chiropractic care works by improving the function of your nervous system, and eliminating the stress from your spine and other parts of your body. Less bodily stress means body processes don’t have to work so hard when they should be resting.

Whatever you do, prioritize sleep in your life and you’ll start reaping the benefits almost immediately.
